Whitgift School's great success at the Inter-Schools Cycling Track Championships.
The Whitgift Outdoor Education cyclists had a very successful outing at the annual Inter-Schools Cycling Track Championships, at the Herne Hill Velodrome, on Monday 2 May.
In the U14 category, it was silver medals all round. The team of Luc Roux, Max Lawson, Kit Bellman came second in both the Team Pursuit and the Overall Team events. Max was runner-up in the Flying 200m and the Match Sprint. Luc also received medal success, with silver in the Points Race.
The U16s were also podium finishers, with Anton Iwaniuk, Joseph Munyard, Robert Rice performing outstandingly with Team Pursuit and Overall Team gold. Whitgift took the top two places in the Flying 200, with gold and silver for Anton Iwaniuk and Aidan Quigley, respectively. Anton added to his medals with silver in the Match Sprint. Joseph rounded off the U16 medal haul with a bronze in the Points Race.
The U18s were in fine form, with Max Bergin, Daniel Wyles, Cyrus Hung victorious in the Team Pursuits and Overall Team competitions. Max ended the day with an incredible four gold medals, having also won the Flying 200 and Match Sprint. Cyrus won double silver with the Scratch Race and the Points Race. Daniel added more podium presence with bronze in the Points Race.
Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Ben Green, commented, “Since cycling was launched at the School in 2013, the programme has come on in leaps and bounds. We now have a big group of committed cyclists who train hard and who have created a great sense of camaraderie. The boys rode beyond our expectations again and I was particularly impressed by the performances of the Year 9s, who are all relatively new to racing.”
