Year 9 Engineering Masterclass at Trinity

Trinity School completes its fifth Royal Institution Masterclass programme with great success.

Trinity School, Croydon, has just seen the completion of its fifth Royal Institution Masterclass programme. Almost a hundred Year 9 students from schools across the region attended the classes, either in Engineering or Computer Science. They learned to get to grips with the theory and took part in hands-on activities that gave them real insight into the multi-faceted natures of both disciplines.

The programme took advantage of the excellent facilities that Trinity has to offer and was delivered by academics and practitioners who are experts in their fields. Teachers commented on the cumulative impact the classes are having year-on-year at their schools as successive cohorts of students who have attended the programme make their choices for A-level subjects and beyond.

Having given up their Saturday mornings to attend the classes, the students delayed their departure from the final session for long enough to come to a round-up presentation, attended by parents and family. Dr Manjinder Gillett, a member of the Trinity School staff, spoke powerfully of her own journey into Engineering, illustrated with reference to her work in Finite Element Analysis contexts as widely varied as ‘sharkskin’ swimsuit design, knee-joint replacement and seating in armoured helicopters.

Students were presented with certificates to mark their attendance at the series, and all are invited to special celebration days hosted by the Royal Institution itself later this year.

Trinity Head of Science Bill Tucker commented: “The Royal Institution Masterclass programme was another huge success and continues to grow. Students, teachers and parents gave glowing feedback on the classes, citing the variety of content, the intellectual challenge and the quality of the speakers as key elements in the overall success of the six-week programme. We look forward to continuing the programme for years to come.”
