Closely fought match for Foundation Schools in Surrey U15 cricket match.
Having won the toss and invited Trinity to bat, Whitgift bowled tightly and put the Trinity batsmen under pressure, picking up a few quick wickets as a result. With the score on 34-2 Alex Roberts (66) arrived at the crease, took the bowlers on and scored boundaries freely. Having dismissed Roberts, Whitgift regained some momentum and managed to restrict Trinity to 136-7 from their 20 overs.
The Whitgift openers started well before Roberts (1-14) took a wicket and the highly effective Pawan Peethamber (4-25) dismissed the other opener. On 59 for 2 in the 10th over, Whitgift fought back, batting positively to keep the run rate to ten an over and Trinity under pressure.
With two overs remaining, Whitgift needed 20 to win and, having scored 12 runs in the penultimate over, would have felt confident of securing 8 off the last. Trinity captain, Elliot Lilley, turned to strike bowler Pawan Peethamber to bowl the last over and was rewarded with a catch at long on by Cameron Beglarbegi off the first ball. Whitgift went on to pick up 4 runs, leaving 4 to win from 2 balls. Peethamber, bowling left arm around the wicket, angled the ball in and managed to clean bowl the batsman - leaving 4 runs needed from the last ball with a new batsman on strike.
With the crowd on the edge of their seats, the new batsman played a good shot to long on, pushing the fielder hard and came back for the second run. A strong and accurate throw resulted in a run out attempt but the batsman was in, leaving Whitgift 1 run short and Trinity as Surrey T20 Champions.
