Whitgift's Fifth Former features in Nike's ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’ campaign.

Whether you’ve been shopping on Oxford Street, had a trip to the cinema, or simply been surfing online, you may have come across Nike’s new ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’ campaign. Described as ‘spotlighting the city’s vibrant youth culture and inclusive sports community’, the video features Whitgift’s Joshua Oduje, who was selected to play for the England U16 basketball squad recently.

The 15-year-old, who is also co-captain and leading scorer of Whitgift’s U19 team, was scouted by the global brand whilst playing at his basketball club, London Thunder. After doing a screen test, Josh met with Nike’s in-house team and was cast in November last year, around the time that he was attracting the attention of the England national coaches.

Filming took place in December, with the basketball scene set in Dalston and the Morley’s chicken shop scene in Peckham. The basketball scene was choreographed and Josh had no trouble picking it up first time round!

Nike had a surprise in store for Josh for the chicken shop scene. The producers did not tell him beforehand that he was to shoot the scene with one of his music idols, London rapper, Giggs.

The video was launched in January, which coincided with the news that he had been selected for the England U16 squad. Not a bad start to the year for Josh!

Josh’s Whitgift basketball coaches are very proud of his achievements. Mr Junior Clark has been coaching the Year 11 student since he was just seven years old.

We’re sure to see Josh on the national scene and on the screen again soon – watch this space!
