England Table Tennis Youth Squad member James Smith to compete in 6 Nations competition.

Whitgift School’s James Smith has been selected by Table Tennis England to play in the Cadet Home 6 Nations competition due to take place in Cardiff from 13-15 March 2015.

The Third Form pupil has been a part of the England Youth Squad since September, a set-up geared to ‘help the elite players of the future hit their full potential’. The England Youth Squad includes regular training camps and support from national coaching staff.

The 13-year-old recently won the U19 individual category at the Jack Petchey London Schools’ Championships, held at Shirley Park Academy on 29 January. He overcame some tough opposition to claim the title, which resulted in his inclusion in the Jack Petchey London Schools’ Championships Final, as well as the Butterfly Individual Championship finals, a national tournament, due to take place later this year.

Mr Simon Beck, master-in-charge of table tennis, commented, “James is an outstanding talent who is working very hard with his coaches. He is one of a number of pupils at the School with a flair for the game, such as London South Table Tennis runner-up, Reiss Vydelingum, to represent Whitgift.”
