Sing your heart out with Croydon’s Carers Choir at the Carers Support Centre.
Croydon carers are invited to come along to free and friendly group singing sessions on fortnightly Wednesdays from 9 September, 11am to 12.15pm, at the Carers Support Centre, central Croydon.
The sessions, led by Katie Rose, a local singer, musician, sound therapist and vocal coach, are open to any carer in Croydon, regardless of singing ability - no previous singing experience is required.
The choir caters for a range of musical tastes with a host of musical styles on offer including gospel, blues, and world music.
Singing brings a host of health and well-being benefits, including a calming effect equivalent to a yoga session, and promotes the release of endorphins - which is why it has a reputation for putting smiles on people's faces.
One carer added: "This has really lifted me and cheered me up - I'm feeling so much better", and another carer said: "Fantastic, I've lost my inhibitions!"
Katie comments: “Many people may feel a little scared about joining a singing group – I hear so many stories of humiliation, shaming or teasing that has left people feeling unable to sing or express themselves freely. The good news is that we can overcome these fears. I understand that it takes courage to sing, and so I ensure that no-one is put on the spot and that everyone knows they always have a choice whether they want to participate in a song or activity. Warm ups are designed to put everyone at ease and to start having fun together – breathing exercises are particularly important because when we allow ourselves to stop and take a deep breath, we immediately become calmer. We also sing a diverse range of songs so that people can explore their voices and enjoy different styles of singing. The Carers’ Support Centre has a wonderfully warm atmosphere and everyone in the group is very positive and encouraging of each other – we spend time talking and getting to know each other.”
The Choir will meet on the forthcoming dates in September and October:
9 and 23 September
7 and 21 October.
