The Whitgift Foundation supports celebration of local veterans Armed Forces Day 2018.

As part of Armed Forces Week, The Whitgift Foundation was delighted to support Croydon Commitment as they hosted a Veteran’s Lunch at De Vere Selsdon Estate, for over 150 guests on Monday 25 June. Veterans of the Armed Forces and Air Cadets from Royal Russell School marked the event with a drinks reception on arrival in the Orangery. A Saxophonist Quartet from Trinity School, part of The Whitgift Foundation, played war time songs before guests proceeded to the Terrace Suite to enjoy a delicious lunch.

The event brought together veterans of all ages in a stunning setting to reminisce and share experiences of service, while celebrating the work that the Armed Forces continue to deliver. The oral history department at Croydon Museum and the Croydon Citizen captured some great stories from guests who were happy to be interviewed. Veterans also enjoyed a prize raffle supported by the Croydon business Community.

The lunch was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Armed Forces Covenant and the local business community. Martin Corney, CEO of the Whitgift Foundation and headline business sponsor of the event said, ‘Our day care service, The 1596 Club, were immensely proud to support this celebration of the Armed Forces Communities and, indeed, some of our own residents who had served in World War 2 were among the guests. To gather so many veterans together and applaud the contributions they had made to this country was a marvellous way of commemorating Armed Forces Week.’

Colonel McRobbie, OBE TD DL, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Croydon said, ‘The lunch was a wonderful occasion which brought the Armed Service Community, both young and old together to celebrate past events and future hopes. For many of the guests it was a time to reminisce, remember and even make new friendships. We are delighted that the Croydon business community supported the event so enthusiastically and made the event even more successful than that held in 2016. Thank you once again, Croydon Commitment’.

Many local businesses including, Marks and Spencer, Signal Brewery, Coversure Croydon, Nat West, Allianz Partners, Jurys Inn, De Vere Selsdon Estate, Biggin Hill Airport, Waitrose, Handelsbanken and Dot Mailer, supported the lunch with donations, raffle prizes and in-kind support.

The 1596 Club day care service, part of Whitgift Care, offers a home from home experience; helping to relieve loneliness and isolation while supporting older people to maintain their independence. Find out more here.
