Whitgift U19s succeed in retaining their national Butterfly Table Tennis title for another year.
After winning their ESTTA Regional Final matches in Bristol, in February, Whitgift’s U19 powerhouse table tennis team of James Smith, George Hazell, Reiss Vydelingum and Jason Kwok, were through to the national finals, where they were set to defend their 2017 U19 Butterfly Table Tennis title. Whitgift were one of 32 teams that made it through to the tournament finals in Hinckley, Leicester, at the weekend, out of a pool of 286 competing schools.
Determined to bring the trophy back to Whitgift for a second year running, the squad performed outstandingly, defeating Plymouth’s Eggbuckland Community College in the Grand Final, 7-1. On the way, they overcame Nottingham’s Carlton Le Willows Academy and Hull’s St Mary’s College, both 8-0.
Mr Simon Beck, Master in Charge of Table Tennis, commented, “The boys have done amazingly well all year, winning all of their 14 matches and notching up 48 winning games. The coaching and training by Mr Goran Maric and Mr Ewen Stevenson has been outstanding and the team have put a huge amount of time into developing their already excellent skills. We are so proud of this achievement but now need to put even more effort into preparing for the forthcoming World Championships in Malta next month, where we are not only representing Whitgift, but England as well.’’
