Whitgift's U15s sweep through to national rugby quarter-finals.
The U15 squad have been progressing superbly in the national Schools Cup. Following wins against Caterham School (60-7), Howard of Effingham School (48-5) and Trinity School (19-10), the squad faced Hurstpierpoint College for their Round 6 match, last week.
A half-time lead of 24-15 to the home side was not sustainable, with periods of unrelenting pressure from Whitgift narrowing the gap in the second half. Whitgift surged ahead with 10 minutes on the clock and Hurstpierpoint were not able to regain their lead. Tries by Sheahan (1), Adedeji (2) and Opara (2), and a conversion by Volley, ensured Whitgift are through to the quarter-finals, with a final score of 24-27. Credit must go to the team for coming back from a 19-0 deficit.
Whitgift will face St Joseph’s College, Ipswich, in the U15 National Cup quarter-final, on 30 January in an away game.
Elsewhere in the U15 National Cup, Hampton are set to face Millfield, Manchester Grammar will be up against Woodhouse Grove, and Warwick Grove will play Northampton School for Boys, in the bid for the cup.
Mr Chris Wilkins, Director of Rugby, commented, “This was a classic cup tie - a tough match against a strong Hurstpierpoint team. The character and resilience of the boys was outstanding and it was Whitgift to get the win in the end. It is encouraging to see how all the boys are developing over the course of the season. A great deal of credit should go to the coaching of Mr Norris, who is doing a fantastic job leading up the U15s “
